Slow Poison is a reimagining of J.M. Synge’s In the Shadow of the Glen, exploring themes of confinement, isolation, and autonomy within a contemporary Irish context. The design centered on the emotional and physical entrapment of the main character, using the environment to reinforce her lack of agency.
As Scenic Designer, I worked as part of a small creative team on a production staged at Trinity College Dublin, collaborating closely with the director and lighting designer to develop a cohesive visual language. I designed a minimalist, cage-like interior that emphasized restriction while maintaining a functional domestic space, using framing and spatial composition to keep the character visibly confined.
In addition to the design process, I independently constructed the set, translating the conceptual design into a fully realized environment. This required adaptability, problem-solving, and careful material planning, resulting in a set that supported both the narrative and the actor’s movement within the space.
